ALUMNI NEWSLETTER

GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Cougar Alums,

Welcome back to the ACS Alumni Newsletter, and special greetings to our new alumni in the Class of 2017.

In the context of a dynamic, roller-coaster year for our nation, Almaden Country School had one of its best years yet, with our new math program, several excellent new teachers, and our highest re-enrollment (95%) in a decade as some of the markers of our prosperity. Please see my head's report, below, and enjoy this newsletter.

Have a wonderful summer, and if your travels take you in the orbit of Trinidad Drive, please stop by and visit.

Sincerely,

Ole

THE CLASS OF 2017

Graduation at Almaden Country School is unlike any other: it is full of tradition and personal stories which the students and faculty have created together throughout their education.

One of the best benefits of attending a school with grades preschool to eighth grade is that many of the graduates have grown up together and have fond memories of their times building an ice castle in preschool, churning butter in second grade, and heritage projects in fifth grade, to name a few. More importantly, they know their teachers and their teachers know them, having watched them blossom year after year. Our graduation traditions emphasize these experiences and relationships and ensure a congratulatory farewell that is personal.

Beloved Almaden Country School teachers, Mrs. Karen Tomkins (left) and Mrs. Sharon Wilkus, were honored as they retired from their long-time teaching careers at ACS.

Mrs. Sharon Wilkus joined ACS in 1984. Alumni expressed gratitude  for Mrs. Wilkus' art, design and yearbook classes.

Mrs. Karen Tomkins joined ACS in 1986 as a third grade teacher.  Alumni recall how she made learning fun.

REPORT FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

On June 8th, we celebrated the 33rd commencement at Almaden Country School, following a year that was packed with discoveries, accomplishments, and milestones. Chief among them are the Imaginarium, the Bridges Math Program and ACS Athletics.

We opened the Imaginarium, a year ahead of schedule. The Imaginarium is located in the room that used to be the computer lab – the students have access to laptops and tablets in their own classrooms, so a lab is no longer needed – and it has been a spectacular success.

In the Imaginarium, students have access to a variety of materials and tools, including laser printers, sewing machines, a green screen, soldering irons, and thanks to your generous gifts – a router. Teams of students from every class in grades 1-8 worked on projects in the Imaginarium this year ranging from 1st grade's "extreme weather reports" to a working middle school kayak.
