From Our Head of School
Almaden Country Day School has shaped confident, balanced, eager learners for 40 years. As we emerge from the global pandemic, and the many challenges that it posed for school communities nationwide, ACDS families look back with satisfaction and relief on the past nine months. The school year at ACDS was markedly different for our families, whether their students were in-person or at-home learners.
Starting in September 2020, we provided a choice of on-campus, at-home, and hybrid learning platforms; weekly Covid testing; extensive safety precautions and technologies that resulted in zero virus transmission on campus all year; and – most of all – our dedicated, resilient teachers delivering our promise to provide children with a safe, joyful, low-stress and high-opportunity learning environment, despite profound odds against us.
In the context of a nationwide “pandemic slide” in schools, students at ACDS stretched themselves and attained or exceeded our annual learning benchmarks; 98% of our eighth graders applying to private high school were admitted, matching our 10-year rolling average.
And there’s more – but suffice to say that, whether in person or online, our objectives as a school remained constant and firm throughout the pandemic year: to challenge, stimulate, and care for every student, every day; to balance character development with academic rigor and joyful learning; and as our mission promises, to discover the gifts in every child. We are proud to have accomplished those goals, and then some – talk with an ACDS parent, and you’ll hear the stories firsthand.
For 2021-22, we’re moving forward with hope and purpose as we revive familiar and cherished ACDS practices and traditions, and rekindle the warm and involved community that has defined our school since its 1982 founding. What’s more, we’ll commemorate our 40th year of serving families on this campus, as well as the transformational opening of the spectacular new 15,000 square foot Fisher Event Center. We have much to celebrate this year at ACDS, on many fronts, and it’s a very exciting time to join the Cougar Nation.
