All of these files are available on this page. Please note that both the required evaluation form and questionnaire must be signed by a parent and then handed to your child’s current teacher. 5. Student Shadow Dates.

Students entering Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten will shadow for one day in the Preschool or Junior Kindergarten class. Once we receive your student's application, we will contact you to schedule your child’s shadow dates and ask you to fill out a shadow student information form. Once the shadow dates are scheduled, please complete the form and return it to the Admissions Office, admissions@almadencountryday.org, at least 36 hours before the start of the first shadow day.

6. Readiness Assessment.

Students entering Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten will participate in a Gesell Institute assessment administered by a member of our Early Childhood Education staff. Our goal is to determine each child's skill level in areas such as logic and sequencing; auditory, visual and verbal development; and socialization; and to determine developmental readiness for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten. There is no need for your child to study for this assessment.

NOTE: Students entering Preschool do not participate in an assessment.

Please contact Amber White, awhite@almadencountryday.org, in the Admissions Office to schedule your child’s assessment.

7. Family Conversation.

We interview every family applying to the school. Once the developmental assessment is complete, you will participate in a short conversation with one or two admissions representatives. We may ask that either the prospective student and parents/guardians, or just the parents/guardians attend this meeting.

Here is what we will cover:

  • Why you’ve chosen Almaden Country Day School
  • Your goals for your child
  • Your child's specific interests or favorite activities
  • Your desired level of parental involvement
  • Any questions you or your family members may have

Please feel free to bring any relevant assessments or reports from previous schools or programs.  If this will be the first time your child is attending a school or if no assessment was completed for him or her in preschool, you do not need to bring any additional information.

8. Decision Letters/Emails.

At Almaden Country Day School we strive to accept students who will be a good fit for our program while considering the preferences and needs of the family. We do not enroll on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are accepted based on available spaces and on the results of the student shadow and family interview. Where space is not available, students who would otherwise have been accepted will be placed in a wait pool. Decision letters for preschools are typically emailed within two weeks of completion of the application process. For applications received before February 1, decision letters will be emailed on March 12 for Junior Kindergarten applicants and March 21 for Kindergarten applicants. If you apply after February 1, your decision letter will be emailed after March 28.

Pick-up is at 3pm on the blacktop side of the elementary classrooms or for middle school shadows, pick up is located at the corner of Trinidad Drive and the exit to the ACDS parking lot.

a. What happens during the shadow dates?
Your child will have a “shadow buddy” who will guide your child through the day’s regular classes. Your child will have the same homework and class assignments as the other students. Please make certain he/she brings the homework to class the second day.

b. What should my child bring?
Your child should wear his/her typical school clothes and bring a snack and a lunch, if you aren’t purchasing a hot lunch ($6 - $7.25) for the day. Many children also bring a backpack with some paper and pencils, but all additional materials will be provided. When you bring your child to school, please turn in to the office a copy of your child’s report card for the last two years and any standardized testing and educational assessments your child may have completed, if not already submitted.

c. Will my child go through special academic screening?
No. The purpose of the shadow is for the school to determine where your child is within the ACDS curriculum and for your child to see if the school is the right place for him/her. The class work and homework that your child completes will be used to determine if he/she is at the appropriate level for our academic program.

6. Family Conversation.

We meet with every family applying to the school. Once your child has completed his/her shadow, you will participate in a 30 minute conversation with one or two admissions representatives. This can be scheduled after school on the second day of the shadow visit or on another date that is convenient for your family.
