Summer Reading 2022

In the context of relaxation and summer adventures, a moderate amount of summer reading is important for children to maintain their literacy skills.

Our students appreciate that reading is a fun way to travel to far away lands, undertake countless adventures, and pursue their interests during the summer.

Children entering general education Grades 5 - 8 have required summer reading in preparation for classroom activities early in the first trimester. For all of our Pre-K to Grade 8 students, we also have recommended reading lists compiled by our librarian and classroom teachers. 

Students enrolled in The Learning Center are to read a book of their choice, that is at their reading level, for at least 20 minutes every day and parents are encouraged to read aloud to their child to encourage a love of reading.

Students entering the following general education grades should have the listed book(s) read before school starts:

Purchases from local independent bookstore Hicklebee's benefit ACDS Library programs. Just mention "Almaden Country Day School!"


 

Recommended Reading Pre-K - Grade 5

Our librarian and classroom teachers collaborate each year to compile a summer reading guide appropriate for each incoming grade level. These are the titles from which parents can choose; it's important to note that children are not expected to complete the whole list at each grade level. This list will continue to evolve so please check back for new additions.

Recommended Reading Grades 6 - 8

At ACDS, we love to read! Our middle school Literature teachers spend a lot of time thinking about what books our students might be most excited to read this summer. Students have a diversity of interests, opinions, identities, and experiences, and the books one chooses to read should reflect that diversity. To that end, our middle school teachers have selected a variety of books that include a wide array of characters, including people of different cultures and races, people from different countries and families, people in the LGBTQ+ community, and more. Our goal is that students not only get to see themselves in the books they read but also that they take some time to learn about others who might be different than themselves. Above all, we hope students find a book or two that captivates, challenges, and inspires them. Happy reading, everyone!
